Cultural Intelligence for the 21st Century

Glasgow Housing Association - staff training

What are the most important things you have learnt from the workshop?

How my identity is rooted in my culture.

How a sense of belonging/sense of uniqueness affects one's ability to integrate into another culture.

The difference between establishing and judging differences.

That stereotyping can be destructive.

To be aware of where people are coming from ie their own cultural background.

Be open to other people's cultures and beliefs.

Culture doesn't mean right or wrong, just different.

What difference does this make to how you view people from another culture?

It has made me aware that other cultures are not wrong but different and that people coming to Glasgow may need additional support.

How has the workshop helped you to recognise and deal with possible cross-cultural situations?

It has given me a deeper knowledge of how different cultures can be and as a result I'd be more patient.

It has helped me to understand that people are often vulnerable.

One to one coaching on Cultural Intelligence:

Catherine: Library Manager

I feel better equipped now to deal with situations of cross-cultural contact. I analyze myself more and if a misunderstanding occurs I try to see the situation from the other person's point of view as well as from my own.

I have learned that there is no right or wrong way of doing things, only different ways based on one's culture. It is important to look at others in the context of their culture.

I found the coaching experience rewarding and more useful than a traditional workshop or lecture as I felt involved and challenged from the start.

What was helpful in the session on understanding culture?

I had time to think about what culture really means and how I will adapt to a new situation and act in a new environment.

What did you learn about culture and identity?

Made me think of who I am and what makes me what I am - not really thought that through before.

What difference has this session made to how you view people from another culture?

Be more open minded and look on differences positively.

They are different to us, but this does not make how they act wrong.

What else did you find helpful?

I learned to appreciate that there are different ways of doing things.

The five stages of culture shock let us know what to expect.

Learning to watch how people in the other culture do things.
