Culture - what is it?

There are many definitions of culture, but most boil down to the old adage - 'It's the way we do things around here.'

We learn our own culture without knowing it and we are oblivious to it until we come into contact with someone from another culture. That's when the problems start and our assumptions, perceptions and behaviours are all challenged.

Cultural Intelligence is the ability to interact positively with other cultures. When we encounter those who are different we need to be able to identify the differences objectively and be able to negotiate the relationship to bring advantage to everyone.

National Culture is the way we have learned to do things in our own country, where traditions and certain behaviours are taken for granted. We need to learn how to live and work in a multi-national workplace and society in a more productive and agreeable way.

The Model of Freedom provides a vocabulary for describing cultural differences. An online profiler allows for cultural preferences to be displayed for either an individual or an organisation. This opens up the opportunity for a dialogue on difference that is not loaded with evaluation or judgement and allows the differences to be seen as an advantage rather than a challenge.

Organisational Culture is the way we have learned to do things within an organisation or workplace. Sometimes, however, situations develop that destroy the equilibrium of an organisation.
Orgnaizations Alive provides a framework for examining the organisation so that balance can be restored.
